June 2009: Joey is co-curating the following group show:
Now its time to go sleepy bye you worthless piece of garbage!

Artists: Chris Barr / Laurence Chalk / Joey Holder / Tom Johnson / Vera Kox / Joseph Long / Jon Moscow / Jonathan Trayte
The idea behind this exhibition came from a scene of John Carpenters first film Dark Star, which was made on a shoestring budget whilst he was a film student and the financial constrictions played a large part in the writing of the film. Rather than being a burden, Carpenters financial position worked in his favour. He played with the audiences awareness of the low budget nature of the film by making it more ludicrous than it needs to be. Whilst the majority of the props used in the making are relatively believable, the alien is not. It is a large blown up, painted beach ball with the addition of hairy feet and elongated toes with large yellow toenails. The beach ball alien disrupts the viewers suspension of disbelief creating an incongruous relationship with the rest of the film set. The alien is eventually killed and flies off as a normal beach ball with a puncture would. The shipmate says before shooting the alien:
Now its time to go sleepy bye you worthless piece of garbage.
We are going through harsh financial times at the moment and one way to move forward is to use this situation by focusing on the potential it offers. This has led us to put on a DIY exhibition based in our own home. We have left the flat as it is and resisted the temptation to create a white space. This will lower expectations and the potential for making unfounded claims on the art objects status.
With a focus on humor and irony, the works have been chosen to question the idea of art being a serious and highly precious object. By accommodating the works in a home, the emphasis is put on subverting the usual sterile look of art exhibitions and creates a welcoming space inside a domestic environment.
